New Delhi: Switzerland national football team booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinals after defeating Colombia national football team 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw in their Round of 16 encounter.
After 120 minutes failed to produce a breakthrough, the match was decided from the penalty spot, where Switzerland held their nerve to secure a memorable victory. Ruben Vargas converted the decisive penalty to send his side into the last eight of the tournament.
Both teams created opportunities during normal time and extra time, but solid defensive displays and disciplined goalkeeping ensured neither side could find the opening goal. With the deadlock remaining intact after two hours of football, penalties became the deciding factor.
Switzerland delivered under pressure in the shootout, eventually emerging 4-3 winners to continue their impressive World Cup campaign. The victory marks the nation’s first appearance in the World Cup quarterfinals since hosting the tournament in 1954, ending a wait of more than seven decades.
The Swiss now face defending champions Argentina national football team in a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash. Argentina secured their place in the last eight earlier in the day after producing a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt national football team, with Lionel Messi scoring the equaliser and playing a key role in the turnaround.
Switzerland will take confidence into the knockout showdown after their composed display against Colombia, while Argentina will be aiming to continue their title defence in what promises to be one of the standout quarterfinal fixtures of the tournament.
