PERNEM: A shocking case of violent assault and attempted robbery has been reported in Pernem, where a taxi driver was attacked by six unidentified passengers late Wednesday night.
According to police, the incident took place between 8:45 pm and 9:00 pm on July 9 along the Malpe–Naibag stretch of National Highway 66. The victim, Sanjivan Vengurlekar (65), a resident of Calangute and owner-driver of an Ertiga taxi (GA-03-W-4180), had been hired by the accused for a journey from Calangute to Patradevi.
Midway through the trip, the passengers allegedly turned on the driver, restraining him before assaulting him with a sharp weapon. He sustained grievous injuries to his face, head, left shoulder, and forearm. Police said the attack was carried out with an intention to kill, while also attempting to rob his vehicle.
The robbery bid, however, did not succeed.
Pernem Police have registered Crime No. 45/2025 under sections 109, 310(2), 311, 312 read with 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Vivek H. Halarnkar, and efforts are underway to trace the accused.
