PANAJI: According to the Union Ministry of electricity, the average hours of electricity supply in Goa are estimated to be 23.9 hours in urban areas and 23.8 hours in rural regions for 2023–2024, which is comparable to advanced states and better than the general situation for all of India.
Goa is comparable to Maharashtra in terms of delivering a steady electricity supply to commercial, industrial, and residential customers, the ministry stated on Monday. Additionally, the state’s average power supply hours are longer than the national average, which in 2023–2024 was 21.9 hours in rural regions and 23.4 hours in urban areas.
According to the ministry, Goa is not one of the states that experienced power outages in February of this year; only Delhi, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana offer 24-hour power supply nationwide.
According to the government, Goa has received a total of Rs 716 crore under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to assist utilities in meeting their goal of delivering a dependable and high-quality electricity supply. Of this, Rs 247 crore will be used to lower transmission loss, while Rs 469 crore will be used to deploy smart meters.
In response to a query from Sadanand Shet Tanavade, Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik stated that there is a sufficient supply of electricity in the nation and that states can purchase electricity from other states that have excess supply during periods of scarcity.
According to him, state commissions have the authority to set shorter supply hours for specific consumer groups, including agriculture, and power supply and distribution are state matters. “With programs like Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana, Integrated Power Development Scheme, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, and RDSS, the Center supports the state’s efforts to increase the hours of power supply,” Naik stated.
High/low tension lines are erected, feeders are set up, and new transformers are distributed under these programs.
