New Delhi: A scheduled meeting of newly elected legislators of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), chaired by party chief Mamata Banerjee, was postponed on Sunday after a majority of the party’s MLAs failed to attend. The development comes against the backdrop of escalating political tensions in West Bengal following alleged attacks on senior TMC leaders.
The meeting was slated to take place at Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kolkata’s Kalighat area at 3 pm. However, reports indicated that only around 20 of the party’s 80 MLAs reached the venue, leading the leadership to defer the gathering.
Addressing the media, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said the absence of legislators was due to urgent political developments on the ground. According to him, many MLAs were engaged in organising protests and assisting party workers following alleged attacks on TMC national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee and party MP Kalyan Banerjee.
Ghosh stated that the legislators who could not attend had informed the party leadership that they were occupied with handling demonstrations and supporting workers who had allegedly been detained during protests. The legislative party subsequently accepted their request to postpone the meeting and announced that a new date would be communicated later.
The controversy unfolded after Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly attacked during a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas on May 30. TMC leaders claimed he was targeted with stones, bricks, and eggs, sustaining an injury near his eye. The BJP denied the allegations and maintained that local residents were expressing dissatisfaction with the ruling party.
Political tensions intensified further after Kalyan Banerjee alleged that he was assaulted near Chanditala Police Station in Hooghly district while submitting a deputation regarding post-poll violence. In response, the TMC has announced a series of protest programmes across the state over the next 48 hours.
