MAPUSA: A delegation of Together For Mapusa met Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao and urged him to table the proposed Goa Municipalities (Amendment) Bill, 2026 during the forthcoming session of the Goa Legislative Assembly.
The delegation, comprising Vice President Vijay Bhike, General Secretary Jitesh Kamat, Secretary Sushant Pawaskar and Yogesh Kelkar, submitted a copy of the draft Bill to Alemao. Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa was also present during the meeting.
The group said the proposed amendments seek to strengthen municipal administration by introducing greater transparency, accountability and public participation in decision-making.
Together For Mapusa particularly highlighted the proposed provisions concerning Ward Sabhas and Nagar Sabha, saying the reforms would give citizens a greater role in matters affecting their respective communities.
The delegation also pointed out that the draft Bill had earlier been submitted on March 6, 2026, to the Secretary of the Urban Development Department and the Directorate of Municipal Administration for consideration.
During the meeting, Alemao expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s decision to curtail the Assembly session, saying the shortened session limits the opportunity to discuss important public issues and legislative reforms.
Alemao assured the delegation that he would raise the matter during the forthcoming Assembly session.
Together For Mapusa welcomed the assurance and said it hoped the proposed amendments would receive due consideration, with the objective of strengthening local self-government and improving municipal governance across Goa.
