BENAULIM: Traditional fishermen have sought compensation from the Goa Government after three fishing canoes capsized off the South Goa coast amid rough sea conditions.
Speaking on the incident, traditional fisherman Pele said canoe fishermen are permitted to venture into the sea throughout the year as fishing is their only source of livelihood. He said many fishermen continue to brave rough weather despite the risks to earn a living and support their families.
Pele urged the State Government to provide adequate compensation to the fishermen who suffered losses following the capsizing of the three canoes.
Responding to the incident, officials from the Fisheries Department said they had repeatedly issued advisories cautioning fishermen against venturing into the sea during rough weather.
The department, however, acknowledged the losses suffered by the fishermen and said efforts would be made to provide compensation to the affected fishermen in accordance with the applicable government norms.
