CALANGUTE: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has expressed concern about tourism and stated that it is imperative to avoid releasing treated sewage water into Baga Creek from a sewage treatment plant.
According to him, tourism will suffer if large volumes of treated sewage water leak into the sea where the creek meets the sea at Baga.
“The treated water can be used for industrial purposes, plantations, irrigating fields, and watering gardens instead of being released into the creek,” he stated.
According to Lobo, the plant has started serving the people of Khobra Waddo and Sauntawado.
Sarpanch Calangute The meeting was attended by Joseph Sequeira, panchas, members of the biodiversity committee, the Calangute Constituency Forum (CCF), the community, and representatives from other departments.
“Calangute will suffer greatly if the sewerage project is carried out without adequate planning. Premanand Diukar, president of CCF, stated, “We also oppose the reverse channel connecting Saligao because it would impact the biodiversity.”
The CCF opposed to the cutting down of trees for the project and demanded that a proposal for the enlargement of the Calangute-Nagoa road segment be submitted.
According to community lawyer Anthony D’Souza, the Baga facility should be open to Calangute sewage tankers that currently travel to Panaji STP.
