Washington: Donald Trump has triggered controversy after reposting remarks by radio host Michael Savage that included offensive references to countries such as India and China while discussing birthright citizenship in the United States.
The comments were shared on Trump’s Truth Social platform, amplifying a podcast episode in which Savage criticised the concept of automatic citizenship for children born in the US to non citizens. He argued that the system is being misused and called for changes to existing laws, suggesting that the issue should be decided through a national referendum rather than judicial interpretation.
The repost came shortly after Trump reiterated his stance on birthright citizenship, claiming that the United States is unique in granting such rights. However, several countries, including Canada and Mexico, as well as many in South America, also follow similar principles of granting citizenship by birth.
The issue is currently under legal scrutiny, with the US Supreme Court hearing arguments in a case linked to an executive order seeking to restrict citizenship for children born to certain categories of non citizen parents. The outcome of the case could have far reaching implications for immigration policy in the United States.
The resurfacing of such remarks has drawn attention not only for their content but also for their timing, as debates over immigration, constitutional rights, and national identity continue to shape political discourse in the country.
The development has added to the ongoing discussion around birthright citizenship, with critics warning against divisive rhetoric while supporters of reform argue for revisiting policies in light of changing migration patterns.
