PANAJI: The Travel & Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) has urged the Goa government to reconsider the proposed scheduling of the 2026 Goa Assembly elections during the peak December tourist season, warning that it could severely impact the state’s tourism-driven economy.
In a representation addressed to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, TTAG President Jack Sukhija stated that December is the most crucial period for Goa’s tourism sector, with Christmas and New Year festivities attracting thousands of domestic and international visitors.
According to the association, revenues generated during this period account for nearly 12 to 20 per cent of the tourism sector’s annual earnings. TTAG said holding elections during this time could create logistical and operational challenges for tourists as well as tourism stakeholders.
The association highlighted concerns including traffic congestion caused by election rallies, VIP movements and security arrangements, along with possible restrictions under the Model Code of Conduct affecting hospitality events, nightlife activities and festive celebrations.
TTAG further warned that disruptions during the peak season could damage Goa’s reputation as a global tourism destination and negatively affect repeat tourism in the future.
Seeking intervention from the Chief Minister, the association has proposed that the elections be postponed or rescheduled to a period outside the peak tourist months, preferably by the end of February 2027.
TTAG said such a move would help safeguard the livelihoods of thousands dependent on tourism while ensuring a smooth experience for visitors arriving in Goa during the festive season.
