MOPA: Acting on intelligence developed, the officers of DRI Goa intercepted an international passenger, Nitesh Saini at Manohar International Airport, Mopa (North Goa), who had arrived from Abu Dhabi by Indigo flight 6E 1506 in the morning of 18th December, 2023.
During baggage search of the intercepted pax, the officers noticed that the floor spring machine (for doors), which he was carrying in his checked-in bag, was heavier than usual and X ray examination of the machine showed some thing was concealed inside it.
As the floor spring machine was sealed from all sides, it was cut open for examination. After opening it, it was found that disk and rods of solid gold weighing 3.5 Kg were ingeniously concealed inside it.
On interrogation of the said Pax, it was revealed that one person by name of Mohd. Rafiq was coming to collect gold from him outside the airport. Subsequently, a trap was set, and the said person coming to receive the gold from the passenger was also intercepted.
The smuggled gold has been seized, and both the accused, i.e., carrier as well as the receiver were arrested under relevant provisions of Customs Act 1962. Further investigation is under progress.
