MANGALURU: An alleged interstate liquor smuggling operation has been uncovered by Karnataka excise officials, with two persons arrested after a vehicle carrying liquor from Goa was intercepted.
The arrested persons have been identified as Basavaraju Bovi, who is the owner and driver of the vehicle, and Nagaveni Nayaka.
According to excise officials, the special squad acted on information about liquor being transported from Goa without the necessary permits. The team intercepted a Swift Dzire and seized the vehicle along with 438 litres of liquor.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Mangaluru Division Excise Joint Commissioner Balakrishna C H and Dakshina Kannada Excise Deputy Commissioner Bindushree.
The enforcement team included Mangaluru Sub-Division Deputy Superintendent Gayathri C H, Bantwal Sub-Division Deputy Superintendent Santhosh Modagi, Bantwal Taluk Zone Excise Inspector Lakshman Shivanagi, Talapady Check-Post Inspector Dattaguru Athani, Sub-Inspectors Jayappa Shivashankar and Abhishek, and constable Prakash.
Excise Inspector Sunitha from the Joint Commissioner’s office has registered a case in connection with the seizure.
Officials are continuing their investigation to determine the source of the liquor, its intended destination and whether others were involved in the alleged smuggling network.
