PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that Uniform Civil Code is important for women’s empowerment and gender equality.
“Uniform Civil Code is important for women empowerment and gender equality. Many parties are doing politics on UCC. It means they don’t want the empowerment of women and gender quality. UCC is not based on caste and religion. It is upto the centre on when to implement the Uniform Civil Code,” said CM Sawant
He said that he is very proud since Goa is the first state to follow t Uniform Civil Code since
Independence.
“Currently many parties are doing politics over UCC like the Congreee and the SP. The parties playing politics over it does not want women empowerment and gender equality,” he added
Sawant said that UCC is not based on religion and that he would like to thank the PM Modi and welcome the centre’s decision to put forth the bill. I hope the bill is implemented soon. In the last 60 years there has been no problem in Goa after the implementation of the UCC.
He further said that Birth registration is compulsory in this, death registration is compulsory, marriage registration is compulsory, and there is no ban on registration of any caste and religion. And the fourth and most important equal property right is given after marriage.’
“Be it a boy or girl, they become 50% entitled when they marry each other. So what is the crime of being entitled to property’ So I think there is no drawback to following Uniform Civil Code. At present, more than 27% of the population which lives in Goa is minority,” he added
Sawant said that he have been following UCC for a very long time. So there has been no problem in Goa, so I have to say that it is a matter of great pride for Goa to follow the Uniform Civil Code.
“I think, the Law Commission should see how we are following our UCC in Goa that too for 60 years. And no one has any problem then it is necessary to study that too and same way it can be practised in other states,” he added
