SWINDON: Ana Fernandes, originally from Cansaulim, married in Agassim padri Bhatt Goa, has made a profound impact on her adopted community of Swindon, where she has lived for 21 years with her husband, Francisco Gonsalves, and their children. As an NHS Assistant Practitioner, Ana supports Goan patients at her medical center, where she has learned that even the smallest gestures can have lasting effects on people’s lives.
One of Ana’s most impactful contributions has been her participation in Swindon’s annual BIG SleepOut Challenge, which she has joined every year since 2019 to raise funds for local homelessness support. Ana’s son, Hamilton, first joined her in the SleepOut Challenge at just 15 years old, sharing in the powerful experience. “Sleeping outside for just one night was incredibly challenging,” Ana shared. “It gave me a glimpse into the hardships that homeless people face every single day, especially in the biting winter cold.” After that, a few more Goans joined me in the SleepOut, united by the cause to help those struggling without shelter.
Beyond the SleepOut Challenge, Ana’s compassion extends to regular grocery donations through The Helping Hearts, a charity group initially founded by Elizabeth Fernandes, Francisco Gonsalves, Francisco Antao, and Cynara Monteiro.
The group’s name was chosen by Ana and the late Andrew Pegado, and over time they welcomed more members, including Juliet Gomes, Francisco Breeda Fernandes, Blancy Fernandes, Louis Fernandes, Agnes Pires, Meural Cardoso, and Princia Fernandes.
Together, this dedicated team has focused on providing essential groceries to support low-income families, single parents, and individuals facing serious financial hardship. “With the rising cost of living, working families, single mothers, and low-income individuals are finding it increasingly hard to make ends meet,” Ana explained.
In response, The Helping Hearts has organized grocery donations for The Harbour Project, a refugee charity in Swindon, and provides regular food distribution to those in need. Each holiday season, Ana coordinates a special grocery drive to ensure that no one goes without during this difficult time.
Ana’s vision for The Helping Hearts extends beyond current needs: “I want to inspire young people to actively support and uplift their communities in whatever way they can,” she shared. “I hope to see unity among all communities, with people joining together to make a difference.”
Ana’s spirit of giving is fueled by her community of family and friends, who assist with grocery collection, sorting, and delivery. Grateful for their help, she expressed appreciation for The Helping Hearts group and their steadfast support. Ana’s selfless dedication was recently recognized with an MTM Special Recognition Award for her remarkable charity work in Swindon and beyond.
Ana Fernandes’ story is a testament to the power of compassion, resilience, and community. Her unwavering commitment to lifting others up is truly an inspiration.
