VASCO: An abandoned and structurally unsafe building in Vasco was demolished on Thursday, ending years of concern among residents who feared it posed a serious risk to public safety, particularly during the monsoon.
Vasco MLA Krishna Daji Salkar said the demolition was made possible after he personally facilitated discussions between the flat owners and the building owner, leading to an agreement to raze the dangerous structure.
Salkar said the safety of residents must remain the top priority and stressed that unsafe buildings cannot be allowed to remain standing indefinitely while posing a threat to pedestrians and neighbouring properties.
The MLA urged the government to initiate strict action against owners of unsafe buildings who fail to comply with notices issued by the Collector and district administration. He said merely issuing notices is insufficient and that negligent owners should be held accountable if such structures lead to accidents or loss of life.
Residents welcomed the demolition, saying the abandoned building had become a major safety hazard and expressing hope that authorities would take similar action against other dangerous structures across Vasco.
Salkar reiterated that public safety cannot be compromised and called for speedy action to identify and demolish unsafe buildings before they become disaster sites.
