New Delhi: The conflict between the United States and Iran intensified sharply after the US military launched strikes on Iranian military installations following the downing of a US Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz. The latest exchange has heightened fears of a broader regional escalation at a time when diplomatic efforts to end hostilities remain fragile.
According to US officials, American forces carried out multiple rounds of precision strikes targeting Iranian air defence systems, radar installations and ground control stations in southern Iran. The attacks reportedly focused on locations around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy transit route.
Explosions were reported in several Iranian locations, including Jask, Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island and Sirik. Iranian media outlets said some civilian infrastructure was also affected, with reports claiming that water tanks and a telecommunications tower sustained damage during the strikes.
The action came after US authorities concluded that an Iranian drone was responsible for bringing down a US Army Apache helicopter operating near the Strait of Hormuz. While officials indicated the investigation had not determined whether the incident was intentional, Washington described its military response as a defensive and proportionate measure.
Iran reacted strongly to the attacks. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the United States of testing Tehran’s resolve and warned that Iran would not leave any attack unanswered. He also urged foreign military forces to leave the region if they wished to remain safe.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for retaliatory operations, including a reported drone attack targeting the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. Iranian military officials also stated that several US military facilities in the region were targeted in a coordinated response.
Meanwhile, the US military’s United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation had concluded and reiterated that American forces remain prepared to defend personnel and commercial shipping in the region.
The latest confrontation underscores the fragile security situation in West Asia, with both sides signalling a willingness to respond forcefully to further provocations, raising concerns about a wider conflict across the Gulf region.
