VASCO: Vasco Advocates Association (VAA) on Monday evening condemned the brutal attack on Mapusa-based lawyer Gajanan Sawant and demanded that the police officials involved in the brut attack be immediately arrested.
The association also addressed the media while threatening that no lawyer in Goa will defend the police involved in the brutal attack on the fellow lawyer.
The association secretary Adv Chetan Palekar said that the urgent Managing committee meeting of Vasco Advocates Association was held on Monday at Bar Room Vasco Court to condemn the brutal attack on Adv. Gajanan Sawant, who is a member of Mapusa Bar Association, while performing his professional duty by the Police personnel.
“The Advocates strongly condemn the brutal attack on Adv. Gajanan Sawant fully supports the fight against injustice done to Adv. Gajanan Sawant.
The VAA demands that immediate action be initiated against all four policemen involved in the attack and they be suspended till the investigation is completed in all respects. Otherwise, there are chances that the police personnel will influence the investigation. Inspite of the FIR being lodged against the police personnel on 09th December, no arrest has been made to date, which shows the connivance between the police personnel and the investigation agency (Crime Branch) trying to protect the accused. Therefore entire investigation has to be done under the supervision of a retired High Court Judge as the accused involved in the crime are police personnel,” said Adv Palekar.
VAA Past president Adv Dileshwar Naik said that the police personnel involved in the attack are to be arrested immediately as there are chances that they may destroy the evidence.
“False FIR lodged against Adv. Gajanan Sawant, in order to pressurize him, to be quashed immediately. No Advocate from Goa shall represent the accused police personnel before any Court of law. If the need arises, we will approach the Chief Minister of Goa, who is the Home Minister, to intervene in the matter for appropriate direction if the investigation agency does not carry out a proper investigation. We shall approach the appropriate Court in case the investigation is not carried out by the investigation agency in a proper way,” said Naik.
