VASCO: Vasco fish market vendors signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Mormugao Municipal Council on shifting to a new temporary shed and building the new fish market within 18 months.
On Wednesday morning, a group of Vasco fish market fish vendors, along with Fr. Micheal Fernandes, met the Mormugao Municipal Council Chief Officer and Chairperson and signed an MoU between the Vasco fish market vendors and MMC.
Later, speaking to the reporters, Fr. Micheal Fernandes said that the Vasco fish vendors were promised that they would be shifted to the newly built temporary shed. Within 18 months, the new fish market complex project will be completed, and these fish vendors will be redirected back to the new complex.
He further said that the fish vendors had signed an MoU with the MMC, and they expect that the dangerous tree branches at the temporary shed need to be trimmed. The garbage waste at the site needs to be cleared with proper seating arrangement, and water and toilet facilities for the fish vendors need to be provided at this new temporary shed,” he said.
Custodio Dsouza, president of the Old cross fishing canoe owners association, said that the promise given to the Vasco fish market vendors needs to be fulfilled by the MMC. The place where the temporary shed has been erected needs to be cleaned, and proper facilities for the vendors need to be given.
Olencio Simoes, Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott, the general secretary, said that besides the Vasco fish market shed issue, there are several other issues of the fishers community which the MMC needs to give attention to.
He added that the MoU signed will be implemented in its true spirit, and the new vendors will be shifted back to the new fish market complex once it is complete.
