VASCO: Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar has set the ball rolling for clearing major dark spots across the constituency
Launching works to beautify the dark spot at the Mangor Junction, Salkar said that beautification would occur at the dark spot sites to refrain people from dumping garbage at collection points or roadsides.
“We contacted councillors and decided to clear some dark spots in and around the city and its suburbs. We have already removed many dark spots, but many more places need to be cleared. Major dark spots at Mangor junction and Varunapuri junction have to be cleared,” he said.
He added, “We will beautify the place and place benches to give this area an entirely new look. We will also meet the people in the area and understand why they are dumping garbage in this area and what are the real issues”.
“This is the busiest junction, and there is a bus stop here, but the area is so dirty and full of stench, causing an inconvenience to many people. The municipal labours are also tired of clearing the area daily, but the garbage is dumped repeatedly. We want to clear and beautify the area so people don’t dump garbage on roadsides. There are collection centres for garbage contractors, but people also dump garbage here. We are trying to fully pack the collection centre to keep the garbage concealed and avoid the stench, which can cause major diseases in the area. We are also planning to install CCTV and have a watchman here, after which we will meet people and start penalising people as the last option,” he said.
He said there should not be a single dark spot anywhere, considering that door-to-door garbage collection is happening at all locations. Still, people must make use of the facility and stop dumping garbage in the area.
“We will personally meet the people of the area along with the municipal engineer and sanitary inspector before we start acting on violators,” said Salkar.
Councillor Fredrick Henriques said that dark spots will be cleared in a steps-wise format.
“This is a joint effort between MLA and Councillors, and we have plans to clear the dark spots. The people blame the Councillor, the MLA, and even the municipality for dark spots, but ultimately, the people’s cooperation is required to clear the dark spot. We request the people to support us in this initiative, and we assure them to see changes within a month at dark spots. This is a major junction and is the first place that can be seen when we enter Mangor, giving a bad image and creating an eye sore. We assure you that things will change here in a month, but we need people to cooperate with us,” he said.
Segregation is very important, and despite high court orders, nothing is happening. We have reached a stage where we cannot accept mixed garbage anymore, but ultimately it is on people who give the trash, and they need to give it in a segregated manner. I am not blaming everyone, but many well-known people are dumping garbage in this area, and we can blame the municipality when people do not change. We are now taking steps to reduce garbage dumping on the roadsides,” said Henriques
Councillor Amey Chopdekar said that councillors had a joint meeting with the MLA Krishna Salkar on clearing dark spots.
“It was decided that Councillors would identify dark spots and clear the place through joint cooperation. There is one dark spot in my ward at Varunapuri junction, and we will take clearance of that dark spot with pavers, benches, illumination and CCTV cameras after we finish the work here. Varunapuri junction is also a major junction, and the dark spot gives a bad reputation when tourists and people arriving from the airport pass through the area,” said Chopdekar.
