VERNA: A rickshaw driver died after his vehicle collided with a stranded Eicher Tempo on the Verna bypass road in the early hours of August 18.
According to a state complaint filed by Sudeshkumar Desai, Head Constable 5767 of Verna Police Station, the accident occurred at around 4.45 am on the Verna bypass road.
Police alleged that the driver of the Eicher Tempo, identified as Mallappa Chalwadi, a resident of Verna and originally from Bijapur, Karnataka, had negligently parked the vehicle partially on the highway in a dangerous manner.
The complaint states that the tempo driver allegedly failed to take necessary precautions, including placing a hazard warning triangle or using hazard parking lights or indicator signals at an appropriate distance to alert approaching motorists.
The rickshaw, driven by Laxman Tandel, a resident of Vengurla, Maharashtra, was travelling from Margao towards Panaji when it allegedly collided with the stranded tempo from behind amid darkness and poor visibility.
Tandel sustained grievous injuries in the collision and was shifted for treatment to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim. He later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Further investigation is being conducted by PSI David Costa of Verna Police Station.
