New Delhi: In a significant move to address what he describes as unfair trade practices, US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States will soon impose reciprocal tariffs on countries such as India and China. This decision, made public in Washington D.C., aims to mirror the tariffs these nations currently impose on American goods.
Trump emphasized the need for fairness in trade, stating, “We will soon impose reciprocal tariffs — they charge us, we charge them. Whatever a company or a country, such as India or China, charges, we want to be fair; hence, reciprocal.” He noted that this approach has not been implemented before, despite being considered prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The announcement comes on the heels of Trump’s recent comments about India’s stringent tariff policies. During a press conference, Trump highlighted that India has some of the highest tariffs globally, making it a challenging environment for American businesses. He mentioned the example of Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that India’s high tariffs are a significant barrier to doing business there.
Trump also referenced the case of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, which were unable to be sold in India due to exorbitant import duties, forcing the company to establish manufacturing units abroad. “Traditionally, India is right at the top of the pack pretty much. There are a couple of smaller countries that are actually more but India charges tremendous tariffs,” Trump explained.
This move is part of Trump’s broader “Fair and Reciprocal Plan” to correct longstanding imbalances in international trade and ensure fairness across the board. The plan aims to put American workers first, improve competitiveness, reduce the trade deficit, and bolster economic and national security.
