New Delhi: Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday said the INDIA bloc had submitted a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu, raising concerns over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the voting process. The meeting has triggered a political confrontation, with the BJP accusing the Opposition of using the issue to advance its political agenda.
The delegation included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah and other leaders of the Opposition alliance. The memorandum reportedly sought the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations linked to electoral processes and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
After the meeting, Rahul Gandhi said the President had asked the delegation to provide evidence supporting its allegations. He maintained that the Opposition was prepared to submit the material and added that the President had assured the leaders that their concerns would be examined.
The BJP strongly rejected Gandhi’s account of the interaction. Party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi accused the Congress leader of making misleading statements and engaging in what he described as malicious politics. He also questioned the evidence behind the Opposition’s allegations and criticised the decision to raise the controversy during a meeting with the President.
The exchange comes amid escalating tensions between the ruling party and the INDIA bloc over electoral transparency, voter lists and the SIR exercise. The Opposition has maintained that its concerns require investigation, while the BJP has challenged its claims.
Delhi on Alert Ahead of Jantar Mantar Protest
Meanwhile, Delhi has stepped up security arrangements ahead of a protest scheduled for Saturday, October 10, at Jantar Mantar. Organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and student groups, the demonstration is expected to focus on demands for the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation.
CJP activist Abhijeet Dipke has maintained that the protest will proceed despite Delhi Police refusing permission, citing the short notice, previous non compliance with directions and concerns over public safety, law and order and traffic management.
Security personnel have installed barricades at several locations in central Delhi and key entry points. Authorities have also made arrangements to manage potential gatherings and prevent unauthorised demonstrations.
The Delhi Traffic Police has warned of possible disruptions at around 30 locations, with diversions scheduled to begin at 6 am depending on the security situation. Dhaula Kuan Flyover, Mandi House, Connaught Place, Jantar Mantar Road and Sansad Marg are among the areas likely to experience traffic restrictions.
Commuters and passengers have been advised to monitor travel updates, allow additional time for their journeys and follow official traffic instructions. Restrictions around Metro stations and changes affecting some train services have also been reported as authorities prepare for the expected mobilisation.
The President’s meeting with Opposition leaders and the planned protest have added to the political tensions surrounding electoral reforms and allegations of irregularities.
