Kolkata:
In a significant move to bolster border security, the West Bengal cabinet has approved the allocation of 0.9 acres of land in Nadia district’s Karimpur to the Border Security Force (BSF). This decision, made during a cabinet meeting at the state secretariat, is aimed at setting up outposts and installing wired fences along the India-Bangladesh border.
The approval comes at a time of heightened tensions, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently alleging that the BSF was failing to prevent infiltration from Bangladesh. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has vehemently criticized these remarks, labeling them an insult to the 75,000 personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and 33,000 BSF personnel in Bengal. Adhikari also highlighted that the state’s lack of support is hindering the construction of a 284-kilometer fence along the border, with several land acquisition cases still pending.
The land allocation in Karimpur is a crucial step in addressing the ongoing issues of infiltration and cross-border crimes. The BSF had informed the state government about their land requirements, which were subsequently discussed and approved during the cabinet meeting.
In addition to the land allocation, the cabinet has also approved several other key initiatives. The state assembly’s budget session is set to commence on February 10, with the budget scheduled to be presented on February 12. Furthermore, the cabinet has approved the filling of 60 vacancies across various state departments, including the home and hill departments, and the women and child welfare department.
To recognize the achievements of the Bengal Santosh Trophy-winning football team, the state cabinet has decided to offer jobs in the state police to players who face recruitment challenges due to specific physical shortcomings. This gesture is part of the state’s effort to reward the team’s victory in the prestigious football tournament.
The cabinet also approved the establishment of two new police stations for the Special Task Force (STF) in New Town and Siliguri, although no separate appointments will be made for these stations at the moment. Additionally, 881 contractual bus drivers and conductors will be appointed in the transport department.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has instructed all state departments to coordinate for the successful organization of the 8th Bengal Global Business Summit, scheduled for February 5-6. She also directed her cabinet colleagues to remain vigilant during the upcoming Saraswati Puja celebrations on February 3, emphasizing the importance of maintaining law and order to prevent any disruptions or threats to the state’s security.
