CANACONA: While the local body slept over the burying of low-lying lands and water-bodies with heaps of garbage and wastes, even as rains can anytime flood the choked drains and rivulets, some concerned youths of Loliem got themselves active to keep the village safe from eventual floodings.
Stating where there is a will there is a way, environmentalist and social worker Dennis Fernandes led a few like-minded residents of Loliem taking up the challenging tasks of cleaning and clearances of chokked up marshy-land and Flood-gate Drains and Gutters-drains in the village.
Ponds, khazan-lands and other water bodies all engulfed in unwanted dumps were neither attended nor cleaned for years together. We have also cleared three nullahs across the loliem church, besides Paskal-voll (a flood drainage)in ward no.8 and Khandle-Voll (another floodage –drainage)in ward no.9 and the paddy fields ,which were filled with unwanted growth and bushes’,
Inclidentally, a mini-JCB compactor is engaged, the villagers wearing hand-grtoves picked-up broken glass-boittles from floodgate drainages and other water bodies.
‘There is some sorts of ecological disaster we are seeing day-to-day, our eco-system itself suffers’
‘The idea and the purpose of doing this is to awaken the villagers conscience to maintain cleanliness in the village and stop dumping personal garbage and glass bottles I nthe fields and other water bodes. Its hightime people understand the importance of these water bodies, marshy land and the Paddy fields since these are the only source of survival for the future generations. ;
Stating a few well-wishers of the village has also contributed their mite for the casue, Fernandes hoped this will inspite others to carry on such jobs and that will be villagers real victory.
