CANACONA: A 56-year-old woman from Galgibag, Canacona, was found dead after her body was discovered floating in the sea at Galgibag Beach on Sunday morning.
According to Canacona Police, information was received from the Police Control Room at around 10.29 am about a woman’s body floating in the sea. Police rushed to the spot, where the body was retrieved with the help of local residents and lifeguards.
The deceased was identified as Surekha Pagi, 56, a resident of Galgibag, by her son-in-law, Manjit Pagi.
During the inquiry, the deceased’s daughter informed police that Surekha had been under depression for the past three days as her elder daughter was mentally unwell. She had reportedly left her house at around 6 am without informing family members and is suspected to have died by suicide in the sea.
The body was sent to South Goa District Hospital (SGDH), Margao, for a post-mortem examination. The police surgeon certified the cause of death as asphyxia as a result of drowning in water.
After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family for the last rites. Canacona Police have registered an unnatural death case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Further inquiry is being conducted by PSI Ramdas Doifode.
