OLD GOA: Old Goa Police have registered a case against a scooter rider in connection with a fatal road accident at Baiguinim that claimed the life of a 49-year-old woman and left another rider injured.
According to police, the accident occurred on June 1 at around 8 pm near Dessai Wine Store, Baiguinim. The accused, identified as Umashankar Ramlakhan Chavan (48), a resident of Baiguinim and originally from Jaunpur district in Uttar Pradesh, was riding an Activa scooter (GA-07-AD-4857) from Old Goa towards Ribandar.
Police alleged that Chavan was riding in a rash and negligent manner and suddenly took a right turn without noticing a vehicle behind him. In the process, his scooter collided with another Activa scooter (GA-05-K-2556).
The impact caused pillion rider Nilima Saste (49) to fall onto the road, where she came under an oncoming Ola electric scooter (GA-04-R-5529). She sustained severe head injuries and was being shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, when she succumbed to her injuries. Doctors later declared her brought dead.
The rider of the Ola EV scooter, Smital Sudesh Sawant (24), also sustained injuries in the accident and was discharged after receiving treatment at GMC Bambolim.
The offence was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by Head Constable Anant Bhanji of Old Goa Police Station. Further investigation is being conducted by LPSI Jasvita Naik.
