New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has entered the record books as India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, surpassing the tenure of Jawaharlal Nehru and marking a significant moment in the nation’s political history.
The achievement prompted congratulatory messages from leaders across the world, many of whom praised Modi’s leadership, governance reforms and role in enhancing India’s standing on the global stage.
Since first taking office in May 2014, Modi has overseen a period of major economic, social and diplomatic transformation. Re-elected for a third consecutive term in 2024, he has led India through a decade of rapid development, with the country emerging as one of the world’s leading economies and an increasingly influential voice in international affairs.
Among the first world leaders to congratulate him was Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who described the milestone as a reflection of the trust and confidence repeatedly placed in Modi by the people of India. The Sri Lankan President highlighted the strong bilateral relationship between the two nations, strengthened through frequent high-level engagements and India’s support during Sri Lanka’s economic challenges.
From the Pacific region, James Marape praised Modi as a model of leadership and pointed to India’s efforts in poverty reduction and economic growth under his administration. He also acknowledged New Delhi’s growing engagement with Pacific Island nations.
Meanwhile, Kamla Persad-Bissessar commended Modi for elevating India’s role in global affairs. She noted that under his leadership, India has emerged as a prominent voice on international issues and a key player in shaping global discussions.
The messages underscore the growing international recognition of India’s influence and the role Modi has played in strengthening the country’s diplomatic, economic and strategic profile. Over the past decade, India has expanded its global partnerships, increased its presence in multilateral forums and positioned itself as a leading advocate for the Global South.
As Modi reaches this historic milestone, attention is now turning to the priorities and challenges that lie ahead during the remainder of his third term, with expectations high both at home and abroad regarding India’s future trajectory.
