Panaji: More than 140 tennis players have registered to participate in the debut edition of the Bandodkar Panjim Gymkhana Open 2024, a state-level ranking tennis tournament, set to commence on April 1 at the Panjim Gymkhana courts in the state capital.
According to the organisers, a total of 144 tennis players have registered to play in the tournament dedicated to the memory of the state’s first chief minister, the late Dayanand Bandodkar and supported by the Goa State Tennis Association and DB Bandodkar & Sons group.
In the tournament’s open category, 37 participants have registered to participate in the under-14 category, with 25 boys and 12 girls signing up for the event. In the under-18 category, there are 16 boys and 11 girls who have registered. 18 pairs have registered for the mixed doubles category, while 20 pairs have registered for the men’s doubles event. 15 female tennis players and 50 male tennis players have registered in the lady’s and men’s singles categories respectively.
In the veterans’ segment, 14 registrations have been received for the veterans 45+ singles, while 12 pairs have registered for the veteran’s 45+ doubles category 12 others have signed up for the veterans 55+ singles event and six teams for the veterans 55+ doubles event.
“The first edition of the Bandodkar Panjim Gymkhana Open 2024 has garnered a great response, indicating the growing interest in tennis within our Goan community. We aspire that tennis will soon be deeply ingrained in Goa’s sporting culture,” says Sameer Kakodkar, grandson of the state’s first chief minister and a director at the DB Bandodkar & Sons Group, which supports the tournament.
The upcoming all-Goa state ranking tennis tournament is slated to take place from April 1 to April 7 and promises to deliver a week brimming with exhilarating matches and intense competition.
