New Delhi: Japan Air Self-Defense Force Chief General Morita took a sortie in India’s Light Combat Aircraft Tejas during the ongoing Veer Guardian 2026 exercise, with Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh describing the flight as a strong expression of confidence in India’s indigenous fighter aircraft.
Singh said Morita’s decision to fly the Tejas demonstrated the trust placed in India’s homegrown aviation capabilities. He also said the experience could help open new opportunities for exchange programmes and joint training, particularly involving fighter aircraft.
The IAF chief described Veer Guardian 2026 as more than a routine military exercise, saying the engagement was strengthening cooperation between the two air forces while creating opportunities for mutual learning and greater interoperability.
India is participating in the exercise with its LCA Tejas, Su-30MKI and Rafale fighter aircraft, while the Japanese side has deployed F-2A fighter aircraft.
Singh also addressed his upcoming retirement as IAF chief, saying he would step down in about a month. He stressed that the institutional relationship between the Indian Air Force and Japan’s Koku-Jieitai would continue beyond his tenure.
According to Singh, the partnership between the two air forces has developed through successive engagements and is expected to continue expanding through training, operational cooperation and professional exchanges.
He also thanked General Morita for attending Veer Guardian 2026 as a distinguished visitor, saying the presence of the Japanese Air Force chief had elevated the level of the engagement.
The exercise is part of the broader defence cooperation between India and Japan and provides an opportunity for personnel from both air forces to train together, exchange operational experience and strengthen interoperability.
Morita’s Tejas sortie adds another significant element to the exercise, particularly as India continues to showcase the aircraft in international military engagements and expand cooperation with partner air forces.
