New Delhi: The Indian Embassy in Thailand announced that 197 Indian nationals were flown back to India from Mae Sot on Monday aboard two special Indian Air Force flights. The operation was carried out in coordination with Thai authorities after the individuals were detained for violating immigration laws.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited Mae Sot to review the repatriation process. The Indian Ambassador to Thailand, Nagesh Singh, met him at the airport during the operation. According to the embassy, the Prime Minister expressed appreciation for India’s swift action and assured continued cooperation in future repatriation efforts involving Indian citizens freed from scam networks in Myanmar.
The embassy stated that the individuals repatriated had recently crossed into Thailand from Myawaddy, Myanmar. They were allegedly employed in cyber fraud operations and were detained upon entering Thailand illegally. The mission highlighted that both countries remain committed to tackling transnational crimes such as cyber scams and human trafficking, stressing that close coordination between relevant agencies will continue.
The Embassy of India in Bangkok and the Consulate of India in Chiang Mai worked closely with Thai authorities to facilitate the return of the detainees. Officials described this mission as part of India’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of its citizens abroad, especially those who find themselves in distress.
The embassy advised Indian nationals to carefully verify job offers before travelling overseas and to check the backgrounds of foreign employers and recruitment agents. It also reminded travellers that Thailand’s visa-free entry for Indian passport holders is intended only for tourism and short business visits, cautioning against using it to seek employment in the country.
Authorities in both nations have reaffirmed their cooperation as they continue efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in the region and prevent further exploitation of foreign workers.
