PANAJI: In the final month of 2024, Goa witnessed a troubling surge in road accidents, underscoring the pressing need for improved road safety measures in the state. According to the Directorate of Transport’s monthly report for December 2024, a total of 243 road accidents occurred, resulting in significant loss of life and injury.
The report details that out of these accidents, 23 were fatal, with North Goa accounting for 13 deaths and South Goa for 10. Additionally, there were 26 grievous accidents, 35 minor accidents, and 159 non-injury accidents. The total number of fatalities stood at 24, with North Goa recording 14 deaths and South Goa 10.
Breaking down the statistics further, the report indicates that 16 of the deceased were riders on two-wheelers (9 from North Goa and 7 from South Goa), 5 were pillion riders (3 from North Goa and 2 from South Goa), 1 was a driver from North Goa, and 2 were pedestrians (1 from each region). Moreover, 39 individuals suffered severe injuries, with 15 from North Goa and 23 from South Goa, while 58 people sustained minor injuries, split between 16 in North Goa and 42 in South Goa.
These figures highlight the critical road safety issues that Goa faces, particularly during peak travel seasons. The data emphasizes the urgency for the state to implement more stringent safety protocols and infrastructure improvements to reduce the incidence of such accidents.
