PANAJI: Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) in its latest report has said that 16 per cent of the winning candidates have criminal cases pending against them.
Out of the 301 candidates that were in the fray for the recently held elections, 77 had declared criminal cases which takes the percentage to 26 per cent and out of 77 candidates 53 had serious criminal cases.
The ADR also states that 62 per cent of the candidates were crorepati that 187 candidates out of 301. The average assets of these candidates were poised at Rs 6 .48 crore.
Of the 40 winners, 16 have criminal cases, 13 with serious criminal cases, 39 of the candidates are crorepati’s.
Further, 30 candidates have assets of Rs 5 crore and above while 22 have assets of Rs 10 crore and above.
67.5 percent of the winners are graduates and above. Of the 40 candidates, 3 are women MLA’s.
13 (33%) winning candidates have declared their educational qualification to be between 8th pass and 12th pass, while 21 (53%) winning candidates have declared having an educational qualification of graduate and above. There are 6 winning candidates who are Diploma holders.
20 (50%) winning candidates have declared their age to be between 25 and 50 years while 20 (50%) winning candidates have declared
their age to be between 51 and 80 years.
Out of 40 winning candidates analysed, 3 (8%) winning candidates are women. In 2017, out of 40 MLAs, 2 (5%) MLAs were women.
Out of the 40 winning candidates analysed in 2022, 16(40%) winning candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.
Further, Out of 40 MLAs analysed during Goa Assembly elections in 2017, 9(23%) MLAs had declared criminal cases against themselves.
13 (33%) winning candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves. Out of 40 MLAs analysed during Goa Assembly elections in 2017, 6 (15%) MLAs had declared serious criminal cases against themselves.
The ADR report says that 2 winning candidates have declared cases related to crimes against women. Out of 2 winning candidates 1 winner candidate has declared cases related to rape (IPC Section-376).
7 (35%) out of 20 winning candidates from BJP, 7(64%) out of 11 winning candidates from INC, 1(50%) out of 2
winning candidates from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak and 1(100%) out of 1 winning candidate from Goa Forward Party have declared criminal cases against themselves
in their affidavits.
6 (30%) out of 20 winning candidates from BJP, 6(55%) out of 11 winning candidates from INC and
1(50%) out of 2 winning candidates from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
