Panaji: Pitching a startup is often one of the most challenging yet essential tasks for entrepreneurs. Before any product gains traction, founders must first communicate the idea behind it in a compelling and clear manner. Whether addressing investors, customers or government bodies, the ability to present a strong pitch can determine the success or failure of a venture.
With Goa’s startup ecosystem expanding steadily, now home to over 700 DPIIT registered startups, the focus has increasingly shifted from just innovation to effective communication. The Department of Information Technology Electronics and Communications Goa, under the leadership of Rohan Khaunte, has been actively supporting entrepreneurs through initiatives like the Goa Startup Accelerator Programme. These programmes aim to equip founders with not only ideas but also the skills to present them convincingly.
During a recent session held in Panjim, Apoorv Bamba highlighted common mistakes founders make while pitching. These include overloading presentations with product features, failing to define the target audience, lacking differentiation, and not clearly stating what they seek from investors. He emphasized that a pitch should focus on clarity and confidence rather than complexity.
The session introduced a structured approach to pitching, covering key elements such as a strong opening hook, identifying the problem, presenting the solution, showcasing uniqueness, demonstrating traction, and making a clear ask. Founders were also encouraged to tailor their pitch depending on the audience, as expectations vary across investors, corporates, and government stakeholders.
Entrepreneurs who participated in the exercise found it valuable. Roshan Naik noted that the experience helped refine communication and opened new collaboration opportunities, while Vishwesh Bhat described the one minute format as both challenging and rewarding.
Mentor Shane Roy stressed that passion plays a crucial role in pitching. A founder’s belief in their idea must come through clearly, as it significantly influences how others perceive the venture.
Ultimately, a successful pitch combines clarity, authenticity, and storytelling, helping transform ideas into opportunities.
