New Delhi: Gianni Infantino has defended FIFA’s proposal to create a private subsidiary to manage and expand the commercial value of its major tournaments, describing the plan as “an opportunity, not an obligation” for world football.
The proposal, which includes the possibility of selling stakes in FIFA’s flagship competitions such as the World Cup, has sparked widespread debate since it was unveiled. However, Infantino insisted the initiative is designed to generate greater financial returns that can be reinvested into the growth of football across the globe.
In a video message, the FIFA president stressed that the plan is only a proposal and remains part of a broader consultation process. He said the creation of FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) would be subject to approval through a democratic vote by FIFA’s 211 member associations, as well as the FIFA Council.
Infantino said the objective is to unlock commercial opportunities that have not yet been fully realised. According to him, achieving this requires specialised expertise in areas such as sponsorship, broadcasting, licensing and new business ventures, while allowing FIFA to continue focusing on governing and developing the sport.
He explained that the proposed entity would oversee the commercial management of FIFA owned competitions and related business operations, with the revenue generated intended to benefit all 211 member associations.
Addressing concerns over the impact of the proposal, Infantino maintained that the essence of football would remain unchanged. He argued that fans around the world would ultimately benefit from increased investment in the sport, particularly in countries where football infrastructure and development require greater support.
The FIFA chief described the proposal as a significant opportunity to accelerate the global growth of football, while reiterating that no final decision has been made and that member associations will have the ultimate say on whether the plan moves forward.
