New Delhi: The flood situation in Assam remains critical, with the death toll rising to 78 as heavy rains continue to impact several parts of the state. According to the latest official figures, seven districts remain affected, while more than 3 lakh people have been impacted by the floods.
The worst-hit districts include Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Biswanath and Kamrup Metropolitan district. Floodwaters have affected 21 Revenue Circles and 551 villages, disrupting normal life across large parts of the state.
The disaster has also caused significant damage to agriculture, with 21,523.08 hectares of cropland inundated. Authorities are assessing the extent of losses as floodwaters continue to impact farming communities.
Three more fatalities were reported during the latest spell of flooding, including two deaths in Sivasagar and one in Golaghat, taking the state’s total flood-related death toll to 78.
Apart from riverine flooding, Kamrup Metropolitan district has also witnessed urban flooding. Several localities, including Padumbari, Boragaon, Lachit Nagar, Zoo Road, Rukminigaon, Hatigaon and Jorabat, have been affected. However, officials said no population has been reported as directly affected by the urban flooding in the district so far.
Relief operations are continuing across the affected regions, with Assam ministers flagging off 30 trucks carrying food, clothing and other essential supplies for flood-hit families. The relief convoy was accompanied by public representatives, party workers and police personnel to ensure the timely distribution of aid.
State minister Atul Bora said the government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has stepped up relief efforts, including financial assistance of ₹15,000 per affected family, while continuing to supply food and other essential items to those displaced by the floods.
