VALPOI: Goa Police have arrested three people, including the father and elder brother of 24-year-old Shravan Barve from Valpoi, in connection with his murder. Officials now believe a conspiracy was involved, although the exact motive is still under investigation.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, North Goa Superintendent of Police Akshat Kaushal identified the accused as Devidas Barve (64), Shravan’s father; Uday Barve (34), his elder brother; and Vasudev Nakul Ozrekar (43), a daily wage laborer. Ozrekar has been remanded to police custody for 10 days.
Kaushal stated that from the beginning, evidence pointed to the involvement of multiple individuals, prompting the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by the SDPO Porvorim to handle the case.
“There are sufficient indications of a planned conspiracy,” Kaushal said. “We’re still working to determine the exact motive, but preliminary findings show Shravan had distanced himself from his family for nearly five years and had limited contact with them.”
Shravan’s body was discovered early Tuesday morning near his home in Nagargao, Sattari, under suspicious circumstances. A post-mortem confirmed that he died due to asphyxia caused by manual compression of the neck, ruling out accidental or natural causes.
According to police, the victim had a history of strained relations with his father. Devidas Barve had previously filed multiple complaints accusing Shravan of physical assault, and police records include five non-cognizable offences against him, including one instance of arrest.
Police are now probing whether Shravan was shunned by his family or chose to live in isolation. Further arrests have not been ruled out as the investigation continues.
