New Delhi: The future of India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar has come under the spotlight, with reports suggesting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering VVS Laxman as a potential successor if Agarkar’s tenure is not extended beyond September 2026.
According to reports, the BCCI is reassessing its plans to continue with Agarkar until the 2027 ODI World Cup. The development follows discussions within the board after India’s recent tour of England, where controversy surrounding Rohit Sharma’s ODI future reportedly raised concerns among senior officials.
While no final decision has been taken, Agarkar’s future is expected to be reviewed during the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September, when the board will evaluate the leadership of the national selection committee.
Despite the speculation, an extension remains a possibility. India’s upcoming two Test series in Sri Lanka is expected to play an important role in the board’s assessment. Agarkar is also believed to be keen on continuing in the role until the conclusion of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Since taking over as chairman of selectors in 2023, Agarkar has overseen one of the most successful periods in Indian cricket. During his tenure, India lifted three ICC trophies, winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, 2025 Champions Trophy, and 2026 T20 World Cup.
His selection committee has also managed a major transition within the national team, overseeing the retirements of senior players including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli from Tests and T20Is, Ravichandran Ashwin, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja from T20 internationals. At the same time, several emerging players and standout domestic performers have been given opportunities at the international level.
VVS Laxman, meanwhile, currently serves as the Head of Cricket at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where he has played a key role in India’s player development programme. The former India batter also recently served as interim head coach during the T20I series in Zimbabwe in the absence of Gautam Gambhir, further strengthening his credentials for a senior leadership role within Indian cricket.
