New Delhi: The newly formed Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal is preparing for a large scale crackdown on illegal and unregulated animal slaughter units operating across the state, according to senior administrative sources.
The proposed action is understood to have been discussed during the government’s first cabinet meeting, with officials indicating that implementation could begin soon. Authorities are expected to strictly enforce existing High Court directives along with statutory rules related to slaughterhouses, licensing procedures and animal transportation.
As part of the planned drive, district administrations, municipalities and municipal corporations are likely to identify unauthorised slaughter points functioning in residential areas, makeshift facilities and locations allegedly operating without mandatory civic, environmental or health clearances.
Officials have clarified that the initiative is not intended as a blanket restriction on meat consumption or trade. Instead, the focus is expected to remain on ensuring that slaughter activities comply with legal, environmental and public health regulations.
According to senior officials familiar with the discussions, the administration has received repeated complaints from several districts regarding unhygienic slaughter practices, improper disposal of animal waste, groundwater contamination and alleged violations of pollution control norms.
The government is also expected to conduct a review of existing licensed slaughterhouses to determine whether they meet infrastructure and sanitation standards prescribed under civic and environmental laws. Authorities are likely to examine waste management systems, hygiene practices and compliance with public health regulations before allowing continued operations.
The issue has reportedly gained importance in urban and semi urban areas where informal slaughter activities have expanded over the years with limited regulatory monitoring. Officials believe the lack of proper oversight has contributed to growing concerns over sanitation, disease control and environmental safety.
Politically, the move is also being viewed as part of the BJP government’s broader governance strategy in the state. The party has repeatedly accused the previous All India Trinamool Congress administration of ignoring illegal activities due to local political interests and vote bank considerations.
The upcoming enforcement drive is expected to be projected as an effort to establish stricter rule based governance, improve civic compliance and ensure implementation of court directed norms across the state.
