PANAJI: Congress Working President Sunil Kawthankar has alleged that the BJP-led government is attempting to privatise key public assets even as the Congress-led Goy Rakhonn Yatra is receiving a strong public response.
Pointing to a tender issued by the Captain of Ports Department, Kawthankar said the government has proposed to privatise its main building in Panaji along with jetties at Panaji, Betim and Old Goa, besides a floating jetty along the Ribandar causeway.
“While Congress is having the Goy Rakhonn Yatra, BJP is busy with Goy Vikhpachi Jatra,” Kawthankar said, alleging that the government’s move amounted to handing over public assets for private use.
Kawthankar claimed that the BJP was “afraid” of the response to the ongoing Goy Rakhonn Yatra and accused the government of diverting attention through its proposed privatisation plans.
He also alleged that the proposed floating jetty along the Ribandar causeway could benefit the casino industry.
The Congress leader questioned the rationale behind privatising the jetties and other assets under the Captain of Ports Department, and called for greater transparency over the tender process and the intended use of the facilities.
