PANAJI: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Monday termed his summons at the Panaji Police Station as a “political witch hunt” by the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleging misuse of police machinery to silence dissent.
Appearing before police in connection with a protest outside the residence of Vishwajit Rane at Dona Paula, Alemao said the BJP was targeting opposition leaders through legal action.
He claimed that law and order in the state had collapsed, alleging that “police and ruling politicians are hand in glove with criminals,” while those disturbing social harmony were being allowed to operate freely.
Calling the summons a “badge of honour,” Alemao said it reflected his stand with the people of Goa.
“Our mantra is ‘Daro Mat’. We are fighting for causes and issues of the people,” he said, adding that the struggle for Goa and Goans will continue.
He maintained that the protest was peaceful and aimed at protecting public interest, while accusing the government of attempting to intimidate and weaken the opposition.
