New Delhi: Mamata Banerjee has asserted that the BJP led Central government will eventually be removed from power, even as the All India Trinamool Congress faces a major setback following the West Bengal Assembly elections. Speaking during a meeting with party MLAs at Kalighat, Banerjee expressed confidence that the political landscape at the national level would change in the coming years.
The remarks came shortly after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a sweeping victory in the state Assembly elections, winning 207 seats and ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15 year rule in West Bengal. The TMC managed to secure 80 seats in the polls.
During the meeting, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee reiterated the party’s determination to continue its political battle against the BJP. He stated that the leadership would not be intimidated despite political pressure and ongoing tensions following the election outcome.
Abhishek Banerjee also launched a sharp attack on senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, questioning the integrity of the current state leadership. He alleged that individuals facing corruption accusations had been elevated to key political positions and maintained that the TMC would continue resisting the BJP regardless of challenges.
Following the election defeat, the Trinamool Congress has approached the Calcutta High Court seeking judicial intervention over alleged incidents of post poll violence across the state. The party has alleged that several of its workers and offices were targeted in attacks, vandalism and arson after the election results were declared.
Banerjee had earlier appeared at the Calcutta High Court in connection with a public interest litigation related to the violence allegations. The petition seeks protection for affected party workers and demands an investigation into incidents reported from Kolkata, Howrah and several district towns.
Both the BJP and the TMC have traded accusations over the violence, with each side blaming the other for clashes reported in multiple parts of the state following the Assembly results.
