CALANGUTE: The Calangute Village Panchayat has announced strict action against eligible residential and commercial properties that have not constituted cooperative housing societies, giving them one month to complete the registration process or face a steep increase in house tax.
The decision follows a resolution adopted by the panchayat on June 29, 2026, with a public notice issued on July 14 directing owners and occupants of flats, apartment complexes, residential buildings and commercial establishments to register cooperative housing societies under the Goa Cooperative Societies Act, 2001.
Under the directive, any eligible property that remains unregistered after the stipulated period will be charged three times the applicable house tax, making the order one of the strongest compliance measures introduced by the local body.
Panchayat authorities said the initiative is aimed at ensuring that multi-unit developments are managed through legally recognised cooperative societies, improving administration, maintenance of common amenities and overall accountability.
Property owners, residents and managing committees have been advised to begin the registration process immediately to avoid the financial penalty. The panchayat has indicated that the enhanced tax will be enforced once the deadline expires, leaving little room for non-compliance.
