PANAJI: The Directorate of Panchayats (DoP) has asked the Calangute panchayat to de-seal four clubs, even as the local body prepares to restart its inspection and enforcement campaign targeting commercial establishments allegedly operating without the required approvals.
The panchayat had taken action against eight clubs and other commercial establishments last week by sealing their premises. The drive was put on hold on Monday and is expected to resume from Thursday.
Panchayat member Sequeira said the local body was yet to examine the DoP communication directing the removal of the seals, as the panchayat office was closed for the Eid holiday.
The latest development has also triggered questions over the extent of enforcement in Calangute’s busy tourist zone. Former MLA Agnelo Fernandes has urged authorities to conduct checks across the entire belt and take action against establishments allegedly operating as dance bars.
Fernandes questioned why enforcement appeared to be concentrated around Tito’s Lane when, according to residents, similar establishments elsewhere in the area were continuing to operate.
He called for a uniform approach, saying authorities should act against all establishments found to be violating applicable rules rather than limiting the crackdown to a particular locality.
