CANACONA: Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar has welcomed the commencement of work for the long-awaited four-laning of NH-66 from Bendurdem to Canacona, saying the project will significantly improve connectivity and reduce travel time between Canacona and Margao.
Tawadkar said the four-laning of NH-66 has been a long-standing demand of the people of Canacona. He said that following the completion of the Manohar Parrikar Canacona Bypass Road, approval was secured for the four-laning works from Bendurdem to Char-Rasta in Canacona, as well as the Maxem-Polem stretch.
According to Tawadkar, land diversion and acquisition processes for the project have been completed and tree-felling work has now commenced along the proposed 40-metre road width. He said the actual construction, land-filling and other related works are expected to begin in October.
Tawadkar said the project would bring a major improvement in travel connectivity for Canacona. He claimed that once the Bendurdem-Canacona stretch and the Bendurdem-Pazorconi four-laning project are completed, Canacona to Margao travel could take around 30 minutes.
He also pointed out that around ₹1,800 crore has already been sanctioned for the Bendurdem-Pazorconi four-laning project, describing the overall development as a long-awaited dream for the people of Canacona.
Tawadkar credited the Central and Goa governments for their cooperation in taking the project forward. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Goa Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and PWD Minister Digambar Kamat.
Calling the project one of the major achievements of his current five-year tenure, Tawadkar said the improved highway connectivity would provide a significant boost to Canacona and make travel to other parts of Goa faster and easier.
