MAPUSA: With every passing day, the opposition to Mhadei Diversion is growing louder.
On Sunday, people from different walks of life united under the banner of ‘Save Our Avoi Mhadei’ in a symbolic Candle Light protest at Mapusa.
People gathered at the Gandhi Chowk, accusing the government of failing to protect the Mhadei river.
They garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and began with the candlelight rally shouting slogans against the government and demanding the protection of Mhadei.
Citizens participating in the protest included Rajan Ghate, Zygal Lobo, Sanjay Barde, Norman Azavedo, Rahul Mhambre, Aishwarya Salgaonkar, Chandan Mandrekar, and others participated in the rally.
Ghate demanded that the government declare the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary as a tiger reserve and said it would help protect the Mhadei river.
“The declaration of tiger reserve will lead to regulations, which will save our river,” he said and appealed to the municipalities, panchayats, Ganesh mandals, students and youth councils to resolve to make Mhadei wildlife sanctuary a tiger reserve.
Expressing happiness over the common people organising the candlelight protest, speakers said people are aware of the importance of water, so they have come out to raise the issue and demanded that the state government file a contempt of court petition against union home minister Amit Shah for making a statement on the Mhadei issue, which is pending before the Supreme Court.
They accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of playing politics over the issue.
