PANAJI: Amid demand by family members of TikTok star and BJP leader Sonali Phogat for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into her alleged murder, Goa Police said that they are capable of taking the case to a logical end.
Goa DGP Jaspal Singh, addressing reporters, said that the track record of the state police in solving murder cases is 100 per cent. “Even conviction rate is good. We are capable of taking this case to a logical end,” he said, responding to a question about the demand of Phogat’s family to hand over the case to the CBI.
“Goa Police (team) is in Haryana; they will stay there to verify evidence. Haryana Police and family members of Phogat are supporting. Once our team comes back, we will take further steps,” Singh added.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has many times reiterated that Goa Police are doing a thorough investigation in Phogat’s case. However, opposition parties in Goa are of the opinion that the case should be given to the CBI.
Phogat had come to Goa on August 22 and was staying at a hotel in Anjuna.
She felt uneasy that night, and the next morning, she was taken to the St. Anthony hospital in Anjuna, where she was declared brought dead.
Phogat’s family has already demanded that the case should be probed by the CBI, not the Goa Police.
“Goa Police is not supporting us, I think political influence is also behind this,” Phohgat’s nephew Vikas Singh told the media. He has also accused the police for not doing the investigation properly.
Earlier, the victim’s family met Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in Chandigarh and demanded a CBI probe.
