PANAJI: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) Leader Sunil U.R. Kawthankar has written to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of 22-year-old Samuel Braganza, describing the circumstances surrounding the case as suspicious and raising concerns about the credibility of the ongoing investigation.
In his letter dated June 7, Kawthankar said the autopsy findings, which reportedly revealed fractures and other injuries on Samuel’s body, have intensified public suspicion regarding the events leading up to his death.
He noted that Samuel had been present at a police station shortly before the alleged suicide, making a thorough and impartial investigation essential.
Kawthankar also questioned the government’s decision to appoint SP Vishvesh Karpe to investigate the case, alleging that the officer’s past record in matters relating to police conduct could undermine public confidence in the probe.
He referred to previous allegations of police brutality and abuse of authority against Karpe and argued that entrusting him with a case involving allegations of police misconduct creates a perception of bias.
Stating that justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done, Kawthankar said an independent agency free from local influence is best placed to uncover the truth.
He urged the state government to recommend a CBI inquiry to ensure transparency, accountability and public confidence in the investigation.
The letter further states that Samuel’s family deserves justice and that a credible, independent probe is necessary to address growing public concern over the case.
