MIRAMAR: Following safety precautions, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) today closed the entrance of the corroding overbridge at Miramar.
The CCP has also asked the Goa College of Engineering (GEC) at Farmagudi, Ponda to conduct a structural stability test of the bridge.
CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate said that there he was unable to take any immediate action since the matter was in Court.
“Decision has not been taken with regards to the foot overbridge as the matter is subjudice,” he said.
It was agreed to ask the Government Polytechnic in Panaji or the Goa Engineering College (GEC), Farmagudi, to conduct a structural audit of the overbridge in order to assess the overall strength and health of the structure and to provide recommendations.
Based on the technical assessment, it was determined that the Corporation would proceed with the destruction of the corroded overbridge by adhering to all legal requirements and obtaining confirmation from the CCP legal cell that no legal action was pending before any court.
The footbridge was constructed at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore by a Hyderabad-based private contractor on public public-private partnership (PPP) model in 2012.
The private contractor entered into an agreement with the CCP and the foot overbridge was thrown open to the public on July 16, 2012.
However, it turned into a white elephant as it was rarely used by the students of the Sharda Mandir or other people.
