PANAJI: The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has expressed readiness to support the expansion of welfare infrastructure for senior citizens and Divyangjan in Goa, including the establishment of additional old age homes and specialised educational facilities.
Addressing media persons at the Secretariat, the Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment said ten old age homes currently operating in Goa with support from the State Government and NGOs are functioning satisfactorily. He stated that the Centre’s welfare scheme for senior citizens has the capacity to accommodate two to three more such institutions in Goa, potentially covering both North and South Goa districts.
The Minister explained that each facility under the scheme can initially house 25 residents, with the option to increase capacity up to 50 beds based on future needs. He added that interested NGOs can submit proposals through the designated online process to seek Central assistance.
Speaking on welfare measures for Divyangjan, the Minister said Census data indicates that Goa has nearly 33,000 differently-abled persons, while more than 11,000 beneficiaries currently receive pension support in the State.
He also pointed out the absence of a dedicated government school for Divyangjan in Goa and said the Centre is prepared to assist the State in setting up such a facility. Discussions are reportedly underway with the Goa Social Welfare Department to strengthen support mechanisms and improve services for persons with disabilities.
Highlighting the impact of various Central schemes in Goa, the Minister said over four lakh people in the State have benefited from the Mudra loan programme, while close to 29,000 individuals have availed assistance under Ayushman Bharat.
The Minister further noted that incidents of atrocities against Dalits in Goa remain comparatively low and praised the State leadership for its governance efforts. He also encouraged citizens to support domestic tourism and focus on financial savings in line with national initiatives promoting economic stability.
