CANACONA: In an exchange of friendly exhibition football matches, Chandor Parish defeated Agonda Parish winning all three matches played at SAG Grounds Agonda on Sunday.
In the first football match played between Agonda Altar-Servers and Chandor Altar-Servers (Boys) holding the fort goalless in the first half Chandor won the match with a facile win over Agonda teenagers with a solitary field goal in the dying minutes of the second half.
Chandor Parish Youth (Girls) defeated St. Anne’s Parish Youth (Girls) in the exhibition Tie-Breaker by 4-3 extended to sudden-death penalty shoot-outs.
It was an entertaining exhibition match of the day played between Agonda Parish Youth and Chandor Parish Youth, where both teams playing a fast-paced match missed some nail-biting finishes to score goals.
After starting cautiously, Chandor Youth were the first to raid and kept attacking Agonda Youth for the first 10 minutes but soon Agonda Youth turned the table around and missed at least four goals by sheer whiskers of either hitting the Goal-Posts or Goal-Bar from the boots of Benhur Rodrigues.
Agonda Youth Goalkeeper Earl Fernandes was successful in keeping Chandor forwards at bay till he was beaten hands-down in a scuffle and the balls raced into the goal with 5 minutes to end the match.
It was in the dying minutes of the match that after a short drive, Rossman Fernandes outsmarted at least three Chandor defenders to score the equaliser taking the match to penalty shots.
Chandor Parish Youth goalkeeper was at his best to block four the seven shots from the Penalty spot taken during the Penalty shoot-out to decide the winner, as the Earl and Brehnun as goalkeepers together blocked an equal number of penalties taken during Penalty shots exhausting all the shoots to decide the match winner via Toss. Chandor eventually won the match by Toss.
The exhibition matches were organised by SAPYA (St. Anne’s Parish Youth Association) between Chandor and Agonda parish played at SAG grounds, Agonda on the occasion of celebrations of Vocation Sunday by Goa Archdiocese.
Fr. Octavin Da Cunha was the Chief Guest, while Agonda Parish Priest Fr. Patrick Luis and Agonda Youth Coordinator Agonda Asstt. Parish Priest Fr. Baltazar, besides Asstt. Parish priests of Our Lady of Behethelem Church Chandor were present. And gave away the trophies and awards.
Incidentally, Sunday on 15th September is celebrated as a vocation Sunday to celebrate the diverse and inspiring journeys of those who have responded to God’s call to priesthood and religious life.
