Chennai: Tamil Nadu is set for a major expansion of its sports infrastructure, with Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announcing plans for a world-class Olympic City and a dedicated Motorsports City in Chennai, including facilities aimed at hosting Formula 1 races.
The announcements were made in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday as part of the state government’s plans to strengthen high-performance sports, develop young talent and attract major international sporting events.
The proposed Tamil Nadu Olympic City will be developed by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority. It will feature international-standard sporting arenas, advanced equipment, a High-Performance Training Centre and specialised Sports Science and Sports Medicine facilities.
The complex will also include residential accommodation for athletes and coaches, creating an integrated ecosystem where sportspersons can train, recover and prepare for major international competitions.
Vijay said the project is intended to help Tamil Nadu produce more Olympic medal winners while also positioning Chennai as a potential destination for major global sporting events.
Alongside the Olympic City, the government plans to establish a dedicated Motorsports City in Chennai. The facility is expected to host Formula 1 and other major motorsport events while providing structured opportunities for young racing talent.
The state also plans to identify promising motorsport athletes and provide them with training and racing opportunities to help develop competitors capable of reaching national and international levels.
The Chief Minister said investment in world-class racing infrastructure could generate wider economic benefits by attracting tourists, supporting specialised automobile and performance vehicle manufacturing, creating employment and strengthening the state’s economy.
The announcement comes as India explores the possibility of bringing Formula 1 racing back to the country. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports formed a task force in June to examine the development and monitoring of motorsports, with a broader objective of facilitating a potential return of Formula 1 to India by 2028.
With Chennai already having a strong automotive manufacturing base and an established motorsport culture, the proposed Motorsports City could further strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position as a major hub for India’s automobile and racing industries.
